Senior Trade Lane Associate

The opportunity:

At Flexport, global trade is powered by data -- data that equips our clients with best-in-class visibility into their supply chains and helps them run their businesses effectively. 

As an Ocean Senior Trade Lane Associate, you will be an integral member of the team and an emerging subject matter expert on a specific trade within your region. In addition to coordinating and executing the end-to-end procurement, solution design, rate setting, and implementation cycles for your geography’s imports and exports, you will act as a right-hand person to a Trade Lane Manager, developing an expertise on the local market and supporting strategies to drive growth and profitability.

You will:

Design and implement specific solutions for Flexport customers

  • Account ownership, including supporting account plan, procurement, and recommending pricing strategy
  • Demonstrate an ability to speak to the historical market context -- what are normal rate levels, market disruptors over the last 2-3 years, etc
  • Coordinate end-to-end creation and delivery of solution for a client
  • Resolve all escalations raised by Client Solutions as quickly as possible, with an eye for mitigating future escalations of the same nature
  • Support the Trade Lane Managers in being a subject matter expert, and where appropriate, join shipper/client calls or meetings
  • Think outside the box to design creative procurement & pricing solutions; partner with Client Solutions to implement those solutions. Work with customer-facing teams to set and determine best freight strategy for a client -- carriers / alliance mix, lane routings, and premiums optionality

Procure rates for Flexport customers and manage internal rate databases

  • Procure rates for customer requests within our network of vendors (carriers & partners); ensure they are readily available in Flexport’s software
  • Manage all types of spot rate quotations and work with vendors to find dynamic and creative solutions for customers
  • Manage all rate databases, cost and sell; ensure integrity of data in both databases
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the internal bid process by being a power user of bid app/pricing opportunities product 

Maintain relationships with external vendors and carriers

  • Interface with external vendors to procure rates and design solutions for Flexport customers, both internal and external
  • Support the Trade Lane Manager in developing and maintaining excellent relationships with external vendors
  • Maintain a pulse on the market regarding our vendors’ costs, capacity, and rate trends
  • Develop a full knowledge of ocean carrier contracts, deep understanding of ocean carrier tariffs, and how they apply / impact Flexport 
  • Develop established relationships with local sales representatives of carriers to facilitate the coordination of high-level escalations, involving coordinations with multiple parties within the carrier. Demonstrate an ability to talk rate, space, and service expectations with the carrier representative at basic level. 

Drive process improvements

  • Master all Flexport internal tools and databases for maintaining buy / sell rates
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve processes or reduce leakage or costs
  • Constantly drive improvements to our service and rate offerings vs competitors
  • Contribute to the design and development of new tools to automate workflows
  • Develop how to lead and manage own projects, working with internal stakeholders to build and maintain progress
  • Embody a “can-do” attitude at all times

You should have:

  • Requires at least 2-3 year(s) of related experience. Bachelor's degree required or equivalent years relevant work experience 
  • Knowledge of product and technology within the industry
  • Experience with regards to imports and/or exports from a sales, operational or procurement perspective. 
  • Experience building and maintaining relationships and partnerships with vendors
  • Analytical skills and metric / data based approach to solving problems
  • Strong analytical background and knowledge of analytical tools (Excel, etc)
  • Strategic vision and ground floor execution
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
