You’ll work alongside self-starters interested in solving real-world problems and streamlining the inefficiencies in the complex global trade industry. Our engineering team is the top-notch software developer team, who love listening to the users, working as a group, and proactively taking the lead whenever necessary. The role involves learning the business of freight forwarding, modeling the work that people do to move freight, designing solutions to make it more efficient, and thinking innovatively to automate much of it. As an Engineer Manager, you will be responsible for managing a team of software engineers, defining a roadmap, communicating status with stakeholders, and delivering the results with the team together. In addition, as the people manager, you are expected to hire and onboard new people, coach, mentor and develop your engineers.

About the team:

We have multiple teams in Shanghai and Shenzhen working on a suite of core products and services that enable Flexport business to scale, including Freight Services Planning, Procurement, Commerce, Security and Infrastructure, Visibility and Schedules, and so on. We are broadly leveraging optimization models, machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP) to build the best solutions for our customers. We are looking for engineering managers who love learning, are passionate about collaborating, and desire to build solutions with a global impact.

You will:

  • Lead and develop a team of software engineers, including project planning, technical leadership and career development of your reports. 
  • Identify best practices and tools to maximize our ability to build and maintain features and services.
  • Drives the team’s technical improvements and roadmap.
  • Collaborates with leadership across teams to define solutions, technical implementation to drive software maturity and practices.
  • Own the overall planning, execution and success of projects that directly improve our top-line business metrics.
  • Working with Engineering Leaders to hire top talent for the team.

You should have:

Basic Qualifications

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience for high-scale products or infrastructure.
  • 3+ years of people management experience for a group of engineers 
  • Passion of building intuitive, high-quality developers tooling, Steaming and APIs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience of building large scale, high-performance systems in a complex, multi-tiered, distributed environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • A love of simple, well-tested code that is easy to extend and hard to break.
  • A bias for action. When you see a problem, you solve it.
  • Experience of managing engineering teams at startups before, particularly during periods of rapid growth and organizational change.
  • Experience of driving the engineering best practices for full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, continuous deployments, testing, and operations.
  • Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
