About Flexport:

We believe trade can move the human race forward. That’s why it’s our mission to make global trade easy for everyone. Flexport is building the platform for global logistics, empowering buyers, sellers and their logistics partners with the technology and services to grow and innovate. Today, companies of all sizes—from emerging brands to Fortune 500s—use Flexport technology to move more than $10B of merchandise across 112 countries every year.

Flexport Research

Logistics has been described as "a backstage pass to the world economy." As the technology platform for global logistics, Flexport has a unique vantage point on global trade and supply chains. Flexport Research offers novel insights and analysis incorporating Flexport and third-party data, promoting Flexport as a cutting edge technology company.

Qualitative analysis and visibility

This division of Flexport Research works with our team of economists and statisticians to develop, present and publish research for both external and internal audiences. We also write regular commentary covering topics related to trade and the global economy, more broadly. The successful candidate will be involved in expanding our coverage to key countries and regions throughout the world.

Description

As an editorial intern, you will report to the senior editor, who is based in Flexport’s headquarters in San Francisco. You will also work with other economists and interns on the Flexport Research team as and when the need arises. The role will be focused primarily on our public-facing research, such as the Weekly Economic Report, weekly Commentary pieces and our monthly proprietary data releases, although there may be instances when you are asked to contribute to work for an internal audience.

Specific duties include:

  • Providing research assistance to the chief economist and senior editor
  • Editing public-facing research
  • Formatting reports for publication
  • Pitching ideas for Commentary pieces
  • Data manipulation and presentation

The position can be remote as long as the candidate is located within the US, with a preference for in-person hybrid within the San Francisco, CA office. This is a three month intern full-time position.

Background and skills

The ideal candidate will be a staff writer or editor on their college newspaper and have taken basic economic courses, with intermediate levels preferred. We are willing to consider candidates with different backgrounds, however.

In addition, we are looking for proficiency in:

  • MS Word and Docs
  • Excel and Sheets (crucially, an ability to make charts and tables)
  • PPT and Slides
  • Statistics

The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations.
